Beware of Telephone Scammers

COVID-19 isn't stopping scammers.

As part of National Consumer Protection Week (28 February through 06 March), this Thursday is designated National "Slam the Scam" Day. The OIG wants to make you aware of these scams and how to protect against them.

Telephone scams in particular have proliferated during the pandemic. If a caller claiming to be a government official demands immediate payment or personal information, or makes threats if you refuse to comply, it is a scam.

Familiarize yourself with what to watch for with the Slam the Scam information sheet.  In addition, the Social Security Administration OIG has an outreach kit on its website (https://oig.ssa.gov/scam) that provides valuable information. We encourage you and your families to take a look and be prepared for when the phone rings!
