INTELLIGENCE OVERSIGHT

Intelligence oversight ensures that NSA/CSS intelligence and intelligence-related functions comply with federal law, executive orders, and DoD and NSA policies, and that Agency activities are conducted consistently with civil liberties and U.S. person privacy protections. The IO mission is grounded in Executive Order 12333, which establishes broad principles under which Intelligence Community components must accomplish their missions.

 

Functions

  • Conducts evaluations of NSA/CSS organizations, collection authorities, programs, and systems regarding compliance with laws, executive orders, regulations, and directives governing intelligence and intelligence-related activities with the goal of protecting U.S. persons' civil liberties and privacy;
  • Conducts special inquiries into specific instances of potential violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), Executive Order 12333, and other applicable laws and directives; and
  • Supports OIG audits, inspections, and investigations.
